May 18, 2021 | All, Deck Cleaning, Deck Maintenance, Deck Protection

When winter rolls around, you might not use your decking area quite so much. But this doesn’t mean you should forget about it altogether.

Take a look at our five tips for protecting your decking area this winter so that you and your deck are ready for some serious entertaining and fun next spring.

1. Remove all the extras you don’t need this season

With winter here, you probably aren’t going to be using your decking for BBQs and gatherings quite so frequently. So what does this mean? It means you don’t need all those lovely chairs, tables, planters and other extras out on the deck. Pack these away carefully until spring rolls ’round again.

2. Get up close with your deck

Now that the space is clear, you need to have a good look at your deck. Spend some time inspecting it. Are there any cracks or areas of damage that you need to repair before winter? How about any areas of rot or mould?

3. Give the deck a good old scrub

Once the inspection is complete, it’s time to give your deck a proper clean. You might want to call upon the experts to handle this job for you if the idea of scrubbing your decking is not so appealing!

4. Seal and finish your deck

A clean deck area is a thing of beauty, but it won’t stay this way all by itself. Of all the ways to properly protect and prepare your deck for winter, there’s one you should never fail to overlook –sealing and finishing. Applying a coat to the timber deck (with the right products) will protect it against damage from moisture, mould and rot over winter.  This is another area where the experts can handle the work for you, so you don’t need to worry about a thing!

5. Keep up with the tidying

Your decking is now pretty much ready for the winter. However, there is something else to think about. You might not be using your decking area quite so often over the winter, but that doesn’t mean it should be left all on its own! Take some time to get out there and tidy up, and check that no area of damage or dirt have formed. This won’t be too much of a big job, but it’s worth sprucing your decking up here and there to make sure it stays protected over the cold season.

  • Regularly sweep leaves and dirt which can accumulate on the deck in those pesky gaps, which can lead to mould and damage to the timber.
  • Remove Any planters where water could collect underneath
  • Stack chairs and pack away furniture that you won’t be using over winter
  • Be vigilant with removing any little pet poop

We would love to help you keep your decking in good shape this winter.
