Say Goodbye to Stains: How to Remove Dog Urine from Your Deck

Dog or Cat Urine: Especially if it accumulates over time, urine can create a powerful odour. You will likely know if your pets are relieving themselves on or under your deck, as you will likely see them entering or exiting the space from time to time.

Simple tips and suggestions how to remove Dog or Cat Urine off your Deck?

As a pet owner, you love spending time with your furry friends outside on your deck. But what happens when Fido decides to relieve himself on your deck, leaving unsightly stains and odours that are difficult to remove?

Don’t worry, with a few simple tips and suggestions, you can easily remove dog/cat urine from your deck and keep it looking great in-between your yearly deck maintenance.

Step 1: Act Quickly

The first step to removing dog/cat urine from your deck is to act quickly. The longer the urine sits, the more difficult it will be to remove. As soon as you notice your dog has been out on your deck, grab a towel or paper towel and soak up as much of the urine as you can.

Step 2: Clean the Area

Now it’s time to clean the area thoroughly. Mix a solution of one part vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle and spray the affected area. Let the solution sit for 5-10 minutes, then scrub the area with a soft bristled broom or a sponge. Rinse the area thoroughly with water and allow it to dry completely. If you have a newly coated deck avoid using vinegar and baking soda, instead wash with warm water immediately. We also recommend test patch a small area first to make sure it does not remove any coating.

DOG URINE

For dog urine, you can use baking soda, vinegar mixed with water or a commercial odour neutraliser or eliminator. When using baking soda, you can sprinkle it over the affected areas and sweep with a broom. Make sure it gets into the grooves of wood and in between deck boards. If you’re using vinegar and water, you simply spray it on your deck or dip a rag in a bucket of the solution. Scrub the deck afterwards. You can repeat the process until the smell is gone.

CAT URINE

There are a number of options for getting rid of the smell of cat urine. These include coffee grounds, vinegar solution, cayenne pepper, baking soda and over-the-counter pet odour neutralisers.

Step 3: Use a Commercial Cleaner

If the vinegar and water solution doesn’t remove all of the dog urine stains and smells, you can use a commercial cleaner designed specifically for removing pet stains. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully, and be sure to test the cleaner on a small, inconspicuous area of your deck before applying it to the entire stained area.

Step 4: Prevent Future Stains

Preventing future dog/cat urine stains on your deck is key to keeping it looking great all year long.

If appropriate train your dog to go to the bathroom in a designated area away from your deck and be sure to clean up any incidents as soon as you notice them.

Removing dog urine from your deck may seem like a daunting task, but with a few simple tips and suggestions, you can easily get rid of those unsightly stains and odours. Remember to act quickly, clean the area thoroughly, use a commercial cleaner if necessary.
